    DESCRIPTION :
    The Association of Micro Finance Institutions of Uganda (AMFIU) is an umbrella organization of microfinance institutions (MFIs) throughout Uganda. It was founded in 1996 and officially registered in 1999 under the NGO Act and as a company limited by guarantee.

    The vision of AMFIU is to be a strong and sustainable national network of all Micro Finance Institutions in Uganda.

    The mission of AMFIU is to enhance the sustainable delivery of financial services by all microfinance institutions in Uganda.

    OVERVIEW OF INDUSTRY :

    The Financial Sector of Uganda

    The financial sector of Uganda is diverse. It is composed of;

    *       Bank of Uganda (The Central Bank)

    *       15 commercial banks

    *       6 credit institutions

    *       1 Post Bank

    *       2 development banks

    *       4 MDIs

    *       1 National Social Security Fund

    *       Uganda Securities Exchange

    *       More than 1000 MFIs and SACCOS

     *       3 National umbrella institutions:

    AMFIU as apex for all MFIs and stakeholders, and 2 apexes for co-operatives which are Uganda Credit and Saving cooperative Unions (UCSCU) and Uganda Cooperative Alliance (UCA) Apart from the formal and semi-formal financial sector as represented by the tiered regulation structure, a huge informal financial sector is found throughout Uganda. Table 1 shows the structure of the financial sector in Uganda.
